The first President of Europe

Speculation of this aggrandisement has increased since Mr Blair sang the EU’s praises in Paris as France prepares to oversee the appointment process. In his most important speech since leaving Downing Street last June, addressing 2,000 supporters of French President Nicolas Sarkozy, Mr Blair said globalisation was eradicating traditional party lines and class distinctions and rendering old political remedies obsolete: ‘It's about today versus yesterday. Less about politics and more about a state of mind; open as opposed to closed,' he said, en français.
It was a fine interview for the post, as he insisted that the era of left and right was over, and the future was about an empire of values, not disparate and competing nation states:
‘Europe is not a question of left or right, but a question of the future or the past, of strength or weakness. Terrorism, security, immigration, organised crime, energy, the environment, science, biotechnology and higher education. In all these areas, and others, we are much stronger and able to deliver what our citizens expect from us as individual nations if we are part of a strong and united Europe.’
The post of President is due to be created by the EU’s 27 nation-grouping in the second half of 2008, when France will chair EU ministerial meetings. M Sarkozy has already identified Mr Blair as the candidate, referring to him as ‘one of the greats', and Mr Blair’s recent conversion to Roman Catholicism has been seen by many commentators as a precursor. The President will be crowned in January 2009, by which time he will probably have completed his term as Middle East
M Sarkozy is clearly a No 1 fan of Mr Blair, describing him as an ideal candidate to run Europe: 'He is intelligent, he is brave and he is a friend. We need him in Europe. How can we govern a continent of 450 million people if the President changes every six months and has to run his own country at the same time? I want a President chosen from the top - not a compromise candidate - who will serve for two-and-a-half years,' said the French President.
And Cranmer is left thinking of a certain quotation by a certain previous president of the Council of Europe, Paul-Henri Spaak:
‘We do not want another committee. We have too many already. What we want is a man of sufficient stature to hold the allegiance of all people, and to lift us out of the economic morass in which we are sinking. Send us such a man and, be he god or the devil, we will receive him.’
Or, indeed, have him foisted upon us.

It would throw our predicament into sharp relief in that our own system of democracy has clearly shown we do not want Mr. Blair and then the European system of patronage and interest will inflict him upomn us once again.
I cannot see how the EU can go on working with such loathing of it stalking not only this country but others.
What he says about Politics is manifestly wrong by the way.
If anyone should want to wreak havoc (or should that be vengeance?) on Europe then placing the man-god Blair's hand on the tiller would seem to be a very good start. The day he ascends to this position is the day that Ladbrokes' odds on WW3 shorten appreciably!
My Majesty is puzzled...
How can the B word person run Europe while simultaneously bringing peace to the middle east against all precedent and giving JP Morgan value for money for their half a mill a year? Oh, and 'earning' his stupendous advance for his memoirs.
The man must be a miracle worker! Perhaps it would not beyond his multi-tasking talents to have Calais restored to its rightful owner (always rankled, that one). Having said that, as I refuse to recognise any 'monarch' after James II, I'm at a bit of a loss to know who the rightful owner would be.
"Your" so called "Majesty" is right - she is very puzzled, confused and obviously suffering from delusions of grandeur among other things. Pretending that the Protestant succession doesn't exist won't alter the facts nor make it go away!! But I'm surprised at her dislike of Mr B considering his recent "conversion". I thought all enemies of truth stuck together!!
Straight Mike - tells it like it is said...

and your point is?
Pretending that the Protestant succession doesn't exist won't alter the facts nor make it go away!!
my majesty inclines to a republic given the present alternatives
Oh so Mary's a republican now...... among other things!! One would have thought she would be praying for the conversion of Charles.
"be he god or the devil, we will receive him"
and,
"Less about politics and more about a state of mind"
Tony Blair is the abolition of politics and morality. He has been corrupted by Rock Music and New Age spiritualism.
"How can we govern a continent of 450 million people if the President changes every six months and has to run his own country at the same time?"
I have a solution: don't try to govern a continent of 450 million people! Let them govern themselves.
‘It's about today versus yesterday. Less about politics and more about a state of mind; open as opposed to closed,' he said, en français.
Vague as opposed to concrete, gasbaggery as opposed to action.
'Europe is not a question of left or right, but a question of the future or the past, of strength or weakness.'
Of New Improved Daz or old, of washing whiter or leaving stains. If Bliar were a skilful conman, it would still be possible to feel hope for European politics. But not when someone so trivial and transparently fake has enjoyed so much success and is still taken seriously by so many.

Now what could the jug-eared usurper be converted into???
I suppose he could make a hat-stand...
Blair should be president.
We could then declair independance and ban him from England as an undesirable alien.
at a time when the EU is sinking under its own beaurocray and may its self be in financial trouble!!
i would advise T Blair not to do it .
given the problems of trying to run such a huge state , and the fact that you have to make everyone grey and compliant in order for it to work.
europe is turning into to prescriptive politics of the worst kind , it hi jacks freedoms and presents them as there liberal invention.
europe is passing its zenith its too fat and uurepresentative , this years eurovison winner says it all!!
More and more he strikes me as just another Bill Clinton, albeit one who exercises greater discretion over his zipper.
bloviator - no, he exercises greater control over the media. his sex life is curious, as he was known to be gay at age 22 (Clarissa Dickson 'Spilling The Beans'}. What happened since? Euan resembles Derry Irvine, Cherie's long-term love interest a lot more than he does Tony. Oh and she's bi, if the rumours about Carole Caplin are correct.
The EU might appoint Tony as its first President. He will then hopefully start a few wars to follow up the success of his Iraq efforts, after bringing Israel and Palestine to a negotiated settlement. Why not one with Russia next? Tony might enjoy a bit of time negotiating with Vladimir.
Always was a sanctimonious hypocrite and always will be.
Brown won't like being under him again!
James - I'm sure that Gordon would be happy to oblige, as long as he gets the usual 'it's my turn next' payback.
You can now see why Blair has sold us down the river. He has never been interested in the people of this country, only his own ambition.
You're right there Johnny 5. Blair, being a rock musician, would behave like this. Rock music has always been about vain celebration of the self.
Who will rid us of this turdulent arse, Tony Blair?
And who will defend the sacred scrolls of the past?
I too could see this coming. Blair really does see himself as the man who could save the world. Thank goodness there isn't a President of the World vacancy, as we know who would apply.
PS: I have linked to you on my blog, although I cannot work out why you are not there already. An oversight. Apologies.
Happily, according to recent articles in the papers, the panjandrums of the EU are indicating that Blair might NOT be their man, since his country is, apparently, not really a team player in this Europe thingy.
Maybe there is a God.
Very interesting comments, although I lament the fact that not many support a European President or the EU at all.
Personally I look forward to a single person in control, especially considering the fact that others seemingly beneath him will be in control of him. So please do not fear the great Mr B. gentle folk, he will surely deliver us from the woes of Atlantiscism.
